Beauty of Sports

Negativity can have repercussive effects on people. But positivity and motivation almost double down on that negativity, and inspire people to strive for success. The issue is the tank of this motivation. It dries up pretty quick.

But this motivation spreads like wildfire. You watch a bunch of Michael Jordan highlights, and suddenly everybody wants to be like Mike. You suddenly feel the urge to train like him, carry his attitude and demeanour, and train your mind to be like his. You watch M.S Dhoni walk into the pitch whilst the entire country chants his name, you feel a chill down your spine even listening to that colossal cheer, and every cell in your body craves for one such moment.

This is what sports is. Not a physical activity. But an emotion. It is all around us. We love it. We live it. We want to be included in its culture. We want to understand the inside jokes within a league, we want to be decked with the knowledge to speak about all advanced metrics of a player and how they can contribute to their team. We correct and taunt the coaches, vibe with the commentators and definitely strive to be like the superstars we admire so much.

But why? Why do sports even matter in this advanced world – where they clearly serve no purpose but entertainment?

They bring out the best in people.

What do I mean by that? From a player’s perspective, sports are a commitment. They dedicate their lives to it. They solely survive off the game, training and aligning their lives to excel.

And as a mere spectator, we find it captivating because we truly witness the potential an individual can possess. When we watch professional sports, we watch some of the most polished players out there, whose skillset and fluidity is extraterrestrial. We admire their commitment, and subconsciously, get inspired by it.

As previously stated, I could still be listening to Space Jam-Jams (pun intended), but be preparing for my 9-5 job. That urge to do something great won’t fade away, instead, it would transfer into whatever I plan on doing next.

Being a student I have a poster of Kobe Bryant on my walls. Not because I want to be a professional basketball player like him, but because I am inspired by him, and his work ethic. His techniques, approach towards his craft and mindset might vary greatly, but I still admire him, for what he did. His language was basketball, in which he composed literary masterpieces.  An inspired me tries to carry out his seminars in my language.

Sports are a medium to communicate certain locutions, which can’t be expressed by the English language.

Sports unite landmasses and create the most unlikely bonds. It evokes such extreme emotions in a person that one can’t help but be addicted to the thrill. It embodies all the requirements of what our primitive ancestors required not obtainable in the modern world.

Endorphins are a helluva drug. And sports? Helluva supplier.
